South Coast Track Gallery

The South Coast Track is a classic coastal/mountain walk in the World Heritage Region of South West Tasmania. These images are from a nine day walk in 1997/98.

Day 1 - Flew into Melaleuca and headed for the side trip to New Harbour.
Day 2 - This was New Years Eve, so we collected abalone and muscles for our feast. We had thin sliced abalone cooked in garlic and butter, muscles in a garlic, wine wine and tomato sauce washed down with plenty of white wine, aged port and sung to the complete version of Auld Lang Syne.
Day 3 - Headed back along the track and over to Cox Bight. We had magnificent pancakes and fresh coffee.
Day 4 - Travelled along the beach and eventually to the campsite at Lousia River. Had a afternoon bathe in magnificent sunshine and cold water.
Day 5 - The big day - over Ironbound Range. Up 900 vertical metres and back down again. The weather was fairly kind, until we reached the top and the clouds rolled in, the wind strenghened to gale force and the sleet started. After crossing this and back down to sea level, we were confronted by a humungous bog stretching in all directions. Campsite was a Deadman's Cove.
Day 6 - A relatively easy day walking to New River Lagoon and crossing via a small boat. We decided to camp at the little used campsite at Rocky Plains. This is a fantastic campsite and very quiet. The open air toilet looks straight over to Precipitous Bluff.
Day 7 - Another easy day walking through Surprise Bay and over to Granite Beach. Here we had a refreshing shower under the waterfall that drops onto the beach.
Day 8 - Another fun walk through much mud and climbing over tree roots to South Cape Rivulet.
Day 9 - An etremely easy walk out to Cockle Creek along the manicured path.
